Working Creatively with Trauma

Clients who have experienced trauma can find it problematic to engage with talking therapies. Therefore, it may be necessary to integrate other ways of communicating with one’s client into practice. This session provides alternate ways of communicating with clients such as the use of art, sand trays, music, walking, and various other methods. All of which will help enhance the client’s experience of counselling and facilitate relationship depth.

The sessions will be face-to-face and gives participants the opportunity to try out different methods of communicating. These practices may also increase the participant’s own self-awareness. There will be opportunities to experience mindfulness exercises and guided imagery relaxation techniques, as well as using art to communicate through the medium of sand trays and guided drawing. Sessions are available to either counsellors in training or those who are qualified. As Bessel van der Kolk stated we need to move away from ‘the tyranny of language’, finding alternative methods to communicate with those are unable to do so verbally.

These sessions will be facilitated by Clare Beasley and Jayne Booth, both of whom are experienced counsellors and supervisors.
