What’s included in our Psychological Trauma Therapy Level 5?

Counsellors will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of clients throughout their professional careers. Many clients will have experienced psychological trauma in its various forms. Within this course, we explore the variety of approaches to trauma, including the medical model and the British Psychological Societies ‘Power Threat Meaning Framework’. The course provides students the opportunity to explore and challenge their own beliefs, enabling growth, self-awareness and empowering themselves. This leads to an integrative framework that provides a safe space and works at a deeper relational depth. You will learn how to conduct assessments to create a structured and safe therapeutic relationship, deepen self-awareness and reflexivity as a developing practitioner, and use supervision and self-care to avoid vicarious trauma, burnout, working a relational depth, etc.

This course provides opportunities to review case studies as an individual and as a group allowing learners to respect and understand others' perspectives. Within this course, a variety of subjects incorporate theoretical and practical experiences. Potential students must recognise the nature of this course will come with several trigger warnings. Training will include lectures on trauma-informed practice, group discussions, case studies, and skills practice. It will explore the history of trauma, and different approaches to working with trauma, as well as increase the self-awareness of the student to promote working in a non-oppressive manner.

Awarding Body

The Counselling And Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) is a specialised awarding body managed by professional practitioners, supervisors, trainers etc. It is the UK’s biggest provider of counselling qualifications in which there are 130 recognised training centres in the UK with 10,000 candidates registered annually.

Ethical Framework

The BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in the Counselling Professions (2018) is central to the philosophy, approach and operation of the programme and all programme training staff agree to work within it. The Ethical Framework can be downloaded from www.bacp.co.uk.

Course Requirements

Classes are held over Zoom, Thursday evenings 6 pm, over 40 weeks. Students will be expected to be in supervised client work with a minimum of two clients per week. To commit to a reflective journal and regular self-care activities. To be a member of a professional body. To be aware the content of the course may impact the student's well-being, therefore, be willing to enter personal therapy if the need arises.

Entry Requirements

19 years or over,

Completed the following courses:

  • CPCAB Level 2 Counselling Skills, (CSK-L2) or Equivalent
  • CPCAB Level 3 Counselling Studies, (CST-L3)
  • CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (TC-L4)
